If I buy a phone online, particularly from ebay, will I still get to keep my original phone number?

I’m looking to purchase a phone online without having to renew or extend my current Verizon contract. If I do so, is it possible to still keep the number I used for my previous cell? Or is it only possible to keep my number by purchasing a phone directly from Verizon? Thanks!
